MoMM3c Sumpter had taken a group of swimmers to the drop-off area. The boat headed out and he was hit by a sniper’s bullet. MoMM3c Sumpter was the only one to be killed at Iwo Jima in that campaign. All the others from UDT 15 were killed when the USS Blessman was bombed.
